learning canto

learningcanto is a personal project I created to help in my Cantonese education.
I found it very difficult to keep track of new vocabulary, tones and quantifiers so I designed a system for myself to input the new words and phrases I learned daily. It is currently under development.

Originally, I had planned for this to be a private resource, but I figured I might as well make it public as I'm sure many people would find it useful. The goal was to make Cantonese a little easier to grasp with practical examples and audio.

The most difficult thing to do was to break down the components of Cantonese and admittedly oversimplify them. The goal was to make a practical guide so that I could easily find a word, get the correct tone, hear the word spoken correctly, and see examples where I would use it.
Cantonese uses quantifiers which makes the language (in my opinion) a lot harder than most. These are add-on words preceding a noun that give it a quantifying amount. Cross-referencing this in the backend required custom fields to link a quantifier to each word posted.

A fun thing I thought would help me learn is a section for commonly used words in certain situations. Topics contain words and phrases that one might hear when doing something (Going for Dim Sum, Going Shopping, etc.).
A benefit is that it acts as a great reference for those travelling to a Cantonese speaking country.
